Connex Family - Digital Materials

Objet’s Digital Materials™ are composite materials fabricated by the Connex Family 3D printing systems based on PolyJet Matrix technology.

Digital Materials are made up of two FullCure 3D modeling materials. The two materials are combined in specific concentrations and structures, to provide desired mechanical properties and to resemble the product’s target materials. This enables more realistic early-stage testing of the product.

The main objective of digital materials, as composites, is to combine two different materials so that the result is a new material with characteristics different than those of the basic materials.

Historically composite materials have always been around—for example; adding straw to mud for building stronger mud walls. Some more recent examples are carbon black in rubber, steel rods in concrete, sand mixed with cement/asphalt, etc. Composites are used in an increasing number of products, ranging from commonly found consumer goods to advanced aerospace structures.

The first commercial implementation of Digital Materials released consisted of 21 materials. Then Objet released nine additional Digital Materials, which together formed Digital Materials Pack 1. These materials offered designers the ability to print model parts having different degrees of translucence—used, for example, to highlight parts of the model. Also possible with these materials is the ability to print parts with a built-in pattern, and to achieve polypropylene simulation with improved dimensional stability.

Digital Materials Pack 2 includes additional 18 new materials, 12 rubber like and 6 rigid. 9 Combinations are made of TangoBlackPlus and VeroWhite and 9 of TangoPlus and VeroWhite.  With this pack, a total of 48 Digital Materials are available, realistically simulating a vast range of industrial materials.
  • The rubber like materials of this pack have a full Shore scale A range; Shore 27, 40, 50, 60, 70, 85 and 95, simulating products made of elastomers/rubber.
  • The rigid materials of this pack simulate the strength and toughness of commodity standard plastics
With Digital Material Pack2 a Connex part can be printed with up to 11 materials in a single build.

With the addition of TangoBlackPlus to the Tango rubber like family and Digital Material Pack 2 Objet can provide customers with 48 different digital materials, enabling great simulation of rubber parts and products made of commodity plastics.
