Models for Exhibitions

Overview

Scenarios whereby companies complete an entire product design process before receiving customer feedback are common due to a lack of true-to-life models that can be displayed prior to product completion.

However, receiving customer feedback early on in the product development process can save precious time and costs. One way to generate a better understanding of how customers perceive a future product is by presenting an accurate prototype at an exhibition. If visitors to the booth respond well to the prototype, then chances are that they will respond well to the final product, and vice versa. This enables the company and its designers to save both time and money early in the product lifecycle and before production by making changes based on the response to the prototype.

Objet customers commonly use models as part of their marketing efforts. Internal research suggests that approximately 19% of Objet customers use Exhibition Models and use the respective, most commonly used application, to gain these results.

These prototypes are printed on Objet 3D printers, and, together with post processing such as painting, metal coating, and more, create a printing reality that gives a real "look-and-feel" and accuracy of the end product. Instead of presenting a pre-series production part, which involves the creation of molds at extra cost, a model that accurately represents the final part is displayed at the exhibition.

This facilitates a better understanding of the product to be launched. Once the exhibition is over, the product can either be further optimized or sent for production (or even scrapped) based on the response. The costs and time incurred are greatly reduced as companies can reach a better understanding of their product prior to its launch in both a shorter period of time and at a significantly reduced cost.

The following diagram depicts the process:

Why Objet?

With Objet, you can “Print Reality”. Objet 3D printers enable you to use fine detail printing, smooth surfacing printing, good tolerance, and easy post processing such as metal coating, painting, polishing, and more, to create prototypes that accurately represent your desired end products. These true-to-life prototypes can be used in exhibitions, so you can get feedback from your customers before your end product is ready.

This means you can make decisions about the product early in the product development life cycle, and save both valuable time and costs. The Alaris™30 Desktop 3D Printer is the only printer in the desktop product range that delivers the quality you need to print 3D models that are accurate enough to display at exhibitions to make the best possible impression on your customers.

Tips & Tricks

Displaying a prototype to customers at an exhibition can be risky if the prototype is not an exact replica of the final product. For this reason, it is of vital importance that the prototype is of the highest quality and is created using accurate, detailed processes. With the ability to "Print Reality" using Objet’s 3D printing technology and simple post processing, you can easily create printed parts that accurately reflect the desired properties of your end product. Post processing is not complex and can be done by following simple instructions provided in the various Objet Application Notes available on the Objet website (www.objet.com).
