Sanchuan Perfects Water Meter Parts and Assemblies with Objet Alaris30

Jiangxi Sanchuan Water Meters Co., Ltd. is a Chinese manufacturer of water metering systems and pipe fitting components for residential, industrial and agricultural markets. the process of manufacturing its wide selection of water meters, Sanchuan makes use of numerous small parts, all of which must fit together with absolute precision. During the design verification process, several parts are assembled together to enable functional testing of new water meter designs prior to production.

“In the past, we outsourced modeling to a service bureau, which involved a lengthy communication process,” explains Mr. Luo, Head of technical center at Sanchuan. “This was not always fruitful and quite often we ended up with model parts that could not be fitted and snapped together due to lack of precision and missing details.”

Sanchuan needed a 3D printing solution that would allow them to produce high-quality parts with fine details. “We needed to be able to accurately snap-fit the water meters’ control panels, and we also wanted the prototype parts to be strong enough to withstand real-world physical testing without deforming,” adds Mr. Luo.

In addition to its multi-part modeling needs and the high quality requirements, Sanchuan needed to find a rapid prototyping solution that would also fit its limited budget.


Affordable, yet high-quality, in-house 3D printing

Sanchuan selected the Objet Alaris30 3D printer, which met all its requirements for durable, finely detailed prototypes, while also addressing its budgetary constraints. “We found that the combined quality and price of the Objet Alaris30 were very attractive and affordable to us,” says Mr. Luo.

The Objet Alaris30, based on Objet’s PolyJet Photopolymer Jetting technology, excels in printing precise parts for functional, fit and form testing. It jets photopolymer materials in ultra-thin layers onto a build tray layer by layer until the part is completed. This produces smooth, accurate and highly-detailed parts, and enables accurate assembly and snap-fit of the water meter models. The model material used by the Objet Alaris30 is strong enough to support multiple rounds of functional testing without prototypes breaking down. This enables Sanchuan to verify that parts will perform as intended, even before they manufacture a final product.

Prototypes is half the time, or less

Compared to the two to three-day outsourcing process, Sanchuan now produces samples and completes testing within a day. “Using the Objet Alaris30 we verify designs much faster, including any required changes. Both our internal and external communications regarding design have also improved dramatically,” says Mr. Luo.

By enabling Sanchuan to print multiple small model parts in-house, the Objet Alaris30 has saved Sanchuan the high costs of outsourced printing. At the same time, it has enabled the company’s design teams to perform more intensive prototyping and testing cycles, thereby increasing quality and eliminating production errors.
