Bringing Coraline To Life with Objet's 3D Models
With the help of breakthrough technologies from Objet Geometries, the innovation leader in 3D printing, the creative team behind the new feature film, Coraline, brought to life an exciting alternate reality and broke new ground in stop-motion animation.
Directed by Henry Selick; Based on the novel by Neil Gaiman

Objet was used to create hundreds of 3D models for Coraline,
including:
|
Individual upper and lower facial expressions that were exchanged on the puppet to create the illusion of talking; |
 |
Full replacement animations cycles. (e.g., the circus mice and shower); and |
 |
Prop silverware, doorknobs, the Volkswagen Beetle and food spreads. |
The Coraline-Objet partnership resulted in a number of stop-motion “firsts,” including:
 |
The first feature-length movie ever made using replacement faces printed on a 3D printer; |
 |
The first-ever computer aided stop-motion animation morphing sequence; and |
 |
The first-ever stop-motion fire to be created with physical, replaceable models. |
With Objet’s help, the character of Coraline had over 208,000 potential
expressions (versus only 800 for the main character in The Nightmare
Before Christmas).
|
This consisted of 320 top plates (eyebrows and forehead) and 650 bottom plates (mouth). |

- By jetting photopolymer materials in ultra-thin layers and immediately curing each layer with UV light, Objet’s patented, groundbreaking technologies transform CAD (computer-aided design) drawings into the industry’s highest-quality models in record time and with extreme precision.
- After 3D printing, fully cured models can be handled and used immediately without post-curing. Gel-like support material, which is specially designed to support complicated geometries, is easily removed by hand and water jetting.
- PolyJet Matrix™ Technology, available on the Connex500™ is the first to enable simultaneous jetting of different types of model materials.
